Rottweilers put down after mauling boy
A BOY has been attacked by two rottweilers that were dragged off him by two men in Lake Macquarie on the Central Coast.
The nine-year-old was walking with two girls in Toronto just before 5pm yesterday (Sunday) when the guard dogs attacked.
The dogs had escaped from a nearby compound, according to reports.
Two men, aged 36 and 26, witnessed the attack and tried to wrestle the dogs off the boy.
The boy was taken to Newcastle’s John Hunter Hospital for surgery to his right thigh and upper arm.
The men also suffered puncture wounds and were treated at a local surgery.
A Lake Macquarie City Council ranger secured the dogs after visiting the owner on Sunday night.
The animals were put down today (Monday), police say.
The State Opposition has called for a special hotline for members of the public to report dangerous dogs, similar to one operating in Victoria.
“This was a sickening incident and my heart goes out to everybody who was injured,” says Opposition local government spokeswoman Sophie Cotsis. |
