Man facing 48 extra firearms charges
A MAN who allegedly purchased an assault rifle for which he did not hold a permit has today (Wednesday) been charged with 48 fresh firearms and illegal-importation offences.
Firearms and Organised Crime Squad detectives laid the charges against the 26-year-old man when he appeared in Toronto Local Court this morning.
Detectives attached to Strike Force Dareen arrested the man at his home in Harrowgate Parade, Blackalls Park, near Newcastle, last December.
He was charged that day with seven offences relating to weapons and parts illegally in his possession, including an AR-15 semi-automatic assault rifle, a crossbow with scope, and pistol magazines.
Detectives seized several other firearms and parts from the man’s property, and as a result of ballistic analysis, have charged him with an additional 48 offences – 45 counts of possess or use a prohibited weapon without a permit, two counts of import prohibited imports, and one of possess unauthorised prohibited firearm.
Police will allege the man was in possession of prohibited machine guns, sub machine guns, and over-capacity firearm magazines suitable for 9mm semi-automatic pistols.
It will be further alleged the man illegally imported firearm parts in two consignments from the US.
The man will re-appear at Toronto Local Court next month.
Strike Force Dareen is an ongoing Firearms and Organised Crime Squad operation focusing on the recovery of firearms believed to be used or sold to persons involved in organised crime, police say in a statement.
Investigations are continuing.
