arrests man with pistol
AN OFF-DUTY police officer has arrested a man armed with a loaded handgun who allegedly threatened a woman in front of her six-year-old son.
The officer graduated from the New South Wales Police Academy only three months ago.
A 24-year-old man allegedly produced the fully loaded weapon during an argument with a 26-year-old woman inside a unit on Cross St in Sydney’s Guilford about 11:45pm yesterday (Wednesday), police say in a statement.
The woman’s young son was inside the unit at the time.
“The off-duty constable heard the commotion and immediately went to the woman’s aid,” the statement says.
“The officer managed to restrain and unarm the man, thereby preventing the incident from escalating any further.”
Police were called and the man was formally arrested and the gun seized.
He is currently under police guard at Westmead Hospital “suffering from a relatively minor medical condition”, police say.
The man is expected to be charged when he is released from hospital later today (Thursday).
“The off-duty officer was not hurt,” the police statement says.
“He graduated from the academy only three months ago.
“The woman and her child were not hurt.” |
