Three-day burn-off at Narran Lake
A THREE-DAY hazard reduction burn-off is underway at Narran Lake Nature Reserve near Walgett.
“NPWS crews will be lighting up from the ground in spinifex grasslands on Saturday and Sunday, while aerial ignition from a helicopter will complete the burn on Monday (August 13),” says National Parks and Wildlife Service area manager, Darren Pitt.
“The purpose of the burn is to create a buffer zone of around 1400 hectares, to stop the spread of a wildfire, should one occur in the park.
“The burn will create a possible smoke hazard on Kurrajong Rd, Narran Lakes Rd in the Walgett Shire and in the Glengarry/Sheepyards rural area.
“The burn follows successful hazard reductions in the Pilliga and Ginghet Nature Reserve last week,” says Mr Pitt.
The Narran Lake burn-off is part of the NSW Government’s $62 million package to boost bushfire preparedness, he says.
