seized – man, 68, facing 18 charges
POLICE have seized 350 rifles, 120 handguns, 900 boxes of ammunition and 100kg of gunpowder from a firearms dealer in the Hunter region.
A 68-year-old man will appear in custody facing 18 charges before Newcastle City Local Court today (Thursday) after a raid yesterday (Wednesday) on the premises allegedly turned up prohibited pistols, unregistered firearms, machinegun parts and a sum of cash.
On Monday August 6, police attended a business on Beauford Ave, Maryland, after a hold-up alarm was activated.
Officers will allege that upon arriving a number of firearms appeared unsecured and that the licence holder appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.
It will be further alleged two other men – who are not licensed to have access to firearms – were present in breach of the Firearms Act 1996, police say.
Yesterday, officers attached to the Newcastle City Local Area Command and the State Crime Command’s Firearms and Organised Crime Squad raided the premises.
The owner of the business has since been charged with 18 various firearms offences
He was refused bail to appear in Newcastle City Local Court today.
Licensing police are continuing their investigation.
