Five horses die in racecourse blaze
AT LEAST five horses have died in a fire at Leeton Racecourse early today (Tuesday).
Emergency services found the complex well alight when they arrived at Racecourse Rd, Leeton, shortly after 4am, police say.
The blaze was extinguished but a block of stables was destroyed and police say at least five horses have died.
Officers have established a crime scene and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fire.
“It is too early to determine whether the fire was deliberately lit,” police say in a statement.
Members of the public are being urged to avoid the area and investigators are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the events leading up to the fire to call Griffith Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
