COWRA
Shire Councillor, Judy Smith, has questioned the installation of an
industrial-strength security fence on Burly Jacky hill on the
Mid-Western Highway east of Cowra.
Cr Smith
told Monday night's council meeting a number of residents had asked her why the
fence had been built
She
asked that operations director, Wayne Bennett, submit a report to the
operations committee's March meeting detailing the background to the
building of the
fence, including the reasons for its construction, whether an
environmental
impact statement (EIS) had been prepared, and what options had been
considered.
Subsequent
inquiries have revealed the fence was built to Roads and Traffic
Authority (RTA) specifications as part of highway reconstruction. Cowra Shire Council is the contractor for the
work which is expected to continue for some time.
The fence has
been built to prevent the dumping of rubbish at the roadside.
Mr Bennett said a substantial quantity of
rubbish has been dumped on the site, including household appliances and old vehicle
tyres.
One wag tells CCN the fence is a safety net for B-double trucks speeding up Burly Jacky, while another suggests it's
been borrowed from Cuba's Guantanamo Bay now that US President Obama has ordered the prison's closure.
