Pair charged over playground robbery
TWO men will appear in court tomorrow charged with a robbery in a children’s playground at Griffith in the early hours of today (Sunday).
About 2:20am, two men were standing at the intersection of Kooyoo St and Banna Ave after leaving a nearby hotel, police say.
The pair, aged 35 and 28, was approached by two men who invited them to a house party.
They agreed to go but were instead led on foot to the children’s playground on Olympic St.
The pair was then allegedly assaulted and their wallets and mobile phones taken.
The two men allegedly demanded the victims walk to a nearby ATM on Banna Ave to withdraw cash.
When they were nearing the ATM, the victims cried out for help and ran towards some bystanders.
General duties officers from Griffith Local Area Command patrolling nearby were quickly on the scene.
They managed to arrest the two men after a short foot chase.
Officers allegedly recovered the victims’ stolen mobile phone in one of the men’s pockets and other stolen property discarded in a garden bed.
Police have since charged the two men, both aged 22, with robbery in company and two counts of demand money from menaces.
They have been refused bail and will appear at Griffith Local Court tomorrow (Monday).
