FOOD SERVICES AVAILABLE

This service involves the daily delivery of hot freshly prepared meals to eligible clients.

It operates in both Cowra and Genfell 7 days a week, Including Public Holidays.

The meals are prepared at ‘Bilyara’ Monday to Friday and Cowra Hotel Mon, Tue, Thurs and Friday’s at Cowra and the Multi Purpose Health Service & Railway at Grenfell.

Weekend meals in Cowra are supplied by Cowra Hotel.

The cost of Bilyara meals is $5.50 per meal, which includes a main meal, sweet, juice and soup in winter and an extra treat weekly. Eg: muffin or scones. Cowra Hotel, Mon, Tues, Thurs and Friday’s $5.50 per meal and weekends $10.00 for meal and sweets.

FROZEN MEALS

Frozen meals are available from the food services offices at Cowra and Grenfell, or can be delivered Wednesday and Fridays in Cowra and Mondays in Grenfell or as required. We deliver to the villages and all throughout the shire.

They can be used to either supplement the hot meals already received by some clients or can provide a complete meal service in themselves, particularly for those living in smaller towns and outer villages. They are suitable for those people who find it difficult to stand and prepare meals or who have trouble getting to the shops regularly.

There are over 50 main/mini meals varieties, over 25 sweets and 8 soups from which to choose.

FROZEN MEAL COSTS:

Main meals: $5.20

Roasts: $5.20

Mini Meals: $4.00

Sweets: $2.00

Soups, Cakes & Muffins: $1.30

COMMUNITY RESTAURANTS

Community Restaurants are held in both Cowra and Grenfell Shires. Please ask for a list of venues. They are held in suitable clubs or restaurants and encourage people to come together and enjoy a meal in a relaxed and friendly environment.

Entertainment is often provided and transport to and from the venue is provided if required.

The program aims to enhance independence at home by providing a variety of nutritious meals and food services in order to meet people’s individual needs.

WHAT DOES MEALS ON WHEELS DO?

Cowra / Grenfell Meals on Wheels is a H.A.C.C service

(Home and Community Care Service)

It provides a range of Food Services for the

frail, aged and younger people with disabilities that are at risk of premature or inappropriate institutionalization so they remain in their own homes. Meals on Wheels also provides a service for the Carers of the people.

What types of services are provided?

Cowra / Grenfell Meals on Wheels provide the following services:

Hot meal delivery

Frozen meals

Community Restaurants

Nutritional screening

Microwave instruction

Cooking lessons and advice

Meal preparation (meat and veggie preparation)

Clients eat delicious

meals prepared by

qualified personnel

Why Volunteer and what’s in it for you?

Without volunteers, Meals on Wheels Food Service would cease to exist. We recognize the valuable contribution made by volunteers and actively encourages their participation because it:

Enables volunteers to contribute to and be of benefit to their community

Provides opportunity for work experience and the development of new skills

Enhances the range of skills available

Allows for community participation in the service

It is a means of enhancing specific talents, personal development and self esteem

Will Volunteering suit me?

A Volunteer should possess the following:

A commitment to serving their communities

Enthusiasm and personal interest in the area of volunteer work chosen

A desire for challenge and new responsibilities

A willingness to devote their time

A willingness to observe the same ethical and conduct standards as paid workers

What skills and qualifications do I need?

Volunteers with the Cowra / Grenfell Meals on Wheels Food Service should ideally possess skills or qualifications in the following arrears:

An empathy with and understanding of the needs of the frail aged and people with disabilities and their needs

Neat and tidy appearance

Good people and communication skills

Honesty and reliability

Driver’s licence and own vehicle if being the driver

Applicants for Volunteer positions will be required to undergo an interview to assess their suitability for the position

Volunteers are required to undergo a Police check

Volunteers will be required to sign an Agreement form

All personal information remains strictly confidential

Volunteers will receive an Orientation Package

Volunteers will receive training relevant to their Volunteer work

Volunteers will be reimbursed for their out of pocket expenses
