2010 Cowra Australia Day School’s Literary Competition
Council was this year once again pleased to coordinate the Australia Day School’s Literary Competition. The theme chosen for 2010 was ‘Australian Sport’. Thanks to all of the school’s that participated. We received entries in the pre-school and primary school sections this year.
We are pleased to award book prizes for 1st, 2nd & 3rd place in each of the sections.
Early Childhood – Section for 3yrs & under
Children were asked to draw or paint a picture depicting something Australian.
3rd place – Digby McGregor, Carinya
2nd Place – Alisha Azzopardi, Carinya
Winner – Chloe Chambers, Carinya
Early Childhood – Section 4-6yrs
3rd place – Cailin McKay, Carinya
Cailin drew a wonderful picture of herself having a swim in the pool under the banner of the Australian flag.
2nd Place – Aaron Azzopardi, Carinya
Artistic talent must run in the Azzopardi family. Alisha’s cousin Aaron was awarded second place for his drawing of swimming at the beach.
Winner – Abby Wilson, Carinya
Abby’s winning entry shows her family bike riding together.
PRIMARY SECTION – Kindergarten to Year 2
Students were asked to draw a picture depicting their favourite Australian sportsperson or team. They were asked to include the name of the sportsperson or team and a short sentence telling the judges why the person or team they had chosen is their favourite.
3rd Place – Grant Kelly –
Grant chose the “Socceroos” for his entry. Grant couldn’t be here today.
2nd Place – Patrick Lazarou,
Another soccer fan, Patrick chose his own soccer team as his favourite sporting team.
Winner – Isaac MacFarland,
Isaac’s entry again depicted soccer as a favourite sport, with a great drawing of Tim Cahill.
PRIMARY SECTION - Stage 2 – Years 3 & 4
Students were asked to write a short report and draw a picture depicting their favourite Australian sportsperson or team.
3rd Place – Darcee Nixon – Year 4, St Raphael’s Central School
Darcee is a familiar winner in the Australia Day Competition, backing up her place from last year with another placing for her entry on “Megan Jones”, the Equestrian rider.
2nd Place – Emma Fricker – Year 4, Cowra Public School
Emma is another multi-year winner, gaining second place for her entry on Stephanie Rice, the Olympic swimmer.
Winner – Julia Cains – Year 3, St Raphael’s Central School
Julia’s entry really impressed the judges with her wonderful drawing of her favourite sportsperson, her own Dad, Steve, our local golf professional.
PRIMARY SECTION - Stage 3 – Year 5 & 6
Students were asked to write a profile of their favourite Australian sportsperson or team. The profile was to describe the person or team they had chosen, the sport they played and what traits made them special.
3rd Place – Caleb Rust – Year 6, Holmwood Public School
Caleb’s chose “Danny Green’, the Australian boxer, for his report.
2nd Place – Jessica Meyers - Year 6, St Raphael’s Central School
Jessica chose Cathy Freeman, the well-known Olympic Gold Medal winning athlete, as her favourite sportsperson.
Winner – Maddison Johnson – Year 5, St Raphael’s Central School
