Threatened rail branch lines: Minister to meet five mayors
STATE Transport Minister, David Campbell, has agreed to meet the mayors of five Central Western councils fighting to save rail branch lines that are facing closure.
The Blayney-Demondrille line through Cowra is one of the threatened lines
Mayors and senior staff from the Cowra, Blayney, Harden, Young and Weddin Shires will meet the minister in three weeks and deliver a consultants’ report which they say outlines reasons why the tracks should not be shut and can, and should, continue to be used.
The study, commissioned and paid for by the councils, recommends upgrading of the lines and the possibility of building loading facilities for bulk freight and containers.
Mayor of Cowra, Bill West, told CCN today (Wednesday) he is pleased to have the opportunity to be part of the presentation of the study to Mr Campbell.
He says it is a follow-up to the presentation of stage one of the study to the Minister at a brief meeting in June 2009.
“We welcome the opportunity to work on a government-to-government basis as we believe the study provides positive directions for the future,” says Cr West.
The study will also be released to the public. |
