Nine teens arrested, four police
injured in drunken party brawl
POLICE are blaming underage drinking for a brawl at a 16th birthday party which left nine teenagers arrested and four police officers injured at Griffith. Around 11pm Saturday, police from the Griffith Local Area Command were called to the party in Daines St amid reports of 100 people, mainly intoxicated youths, fighting and behaving in an anti-social manner. It took officers 40 minutes to bring the situation under control. Four police received treatment at Griffith Hospital for minor injuries including a bite to the arm. Nine teens, aged between 15 and 18, were arrested and charged with a range of offences including assault police and failure to move on. The party had not been registered with local police who were alerted to the trouble by calls for assistance. Some of the youths were uninvited guests. Local licensing police are continuing their investigation into the supply of alcohol to minors at the party in line with the Griffith Local Area Command’s “Supply means Supply” strategy, designed to reduce underage consumption of alcohol. Griffith police warn anyone found supplying minors with alcohol risks prosecution and stiff penalties. |
